What The Heck Was I Thinking?

Sunday, January 3, 2016

Curious about becoming a Beachbody coach? It's a great business opportunity for anyone who wants to work from home, help others and get paid to get fit. It's perfect for stay-at-home moms, retired people, or to supplement another income. No experience necessary. Low start-up costs and training and support 24/7

That's right, what the heck was I thinking last year when I decided to become a Beachbody coach?
Curious about becoming a Beachbody coach? It's a great business opportunity for anyone who wants to work from home, help others and get paid to get fit. It's perfect for stay-at-home moms, retired people, or to supplement another income. No experience necessary. Low start-up costs and training and support 24/7, Brenda Ajay, Beachbody CoachWell, I was thinking that my husband was crazy. No, not for marrying me, but for suggesting that I become a Beachbody coach! Although I was having some success with the programs, I certainly hadn't reached my goal, I'm not athletic, I'm not a personal trainer or even a fitness instructor. I'm just a stay-at-home mom who used Beachbody programs and Shakeology to bounce back after being diagnosed with rheumatoiid arthritis. But I guess he saw something in me that I did not even see in myself - potential and opportunity. I had the potential to inspire others from my own journey and I had the opportunity to make it a business and help supplement our income.

I decided to take his advice (for once, and only once!) and signed up. I created this blog, kept doing what I'm doing - working out to my favorite Beachbody fitness programs and the rest is history. Next month marks my one year anniversary as a coach and as I reflect back on what I've accomplished and the people I have helped, I can honestly say that becoming a Beachbody coach changed my life, maybe even saved my life, and it just keep getting better!

So now that I know I'm not crazy, here are the top 10 reasons why I love being a Beachbody coach:

  1. Allows me time and flexibility to spend time with my family. I can schedule my work around family commitments and work as much or as little as I want.
  2. I stay accountable. Helping people just like you and me reach their health and fitness goals not only helps them but it helps me stay accountable too. For me, staying healthy isn't just a wish, it's a necessity. Staying fit is the best defense I have against my disease and I make sure I maintain a relationship with my clients every day. It's a win-win for all of us!
  3. I formed friendships with other coaches and challengers. This is one of those rare business opportunities where there really isn't much competition. I belong to a much larger team of coaches and we work together and support each other 100 percent! Not to brag, but this team I'm a part of, the Dream Team, is currently the #1 team in all of Beachbody! I'd love for you to join us!
  4. No commute. I work from home, from my desk or my kitchen or the comfort of my couch. It's convenient and comfortable!
  5. Able to be a Beachbody coach and pursue another career. When I decided to become a coach I did it with the understanding that I would not give up my other job. 2 years ago, I started my own online travel agency that I am very proud of. This was my life's dream and embarking on it was a long time in the making. One disadvantage of the travel business is that income is not steady. Beachbody pays weekly and it is a comfort knowing that I can count on some extra cash in my account each week.
  6. I help people, I'm not a salesperson. My job is to inspire, help and motivate other people to reach their health and fitness goals just like I did. My clients (called challengers) do not pay me a dime for my services, Beachbody does that. My job is to provide the added service, daily accountability and 1:1 support to make sure everyone completes their program and does not fail!
  7. I reach people through social media. There's no cold calling or pressuring my family and friends. I connect with challengers through social media every day. Many of them I have never met, but we workout and cheer each other, exchange tips and advice, and keep each other accountable. It's pretty amazing, but these lasting friendships are formed by keeping in touch online.
  8. Support and training are online 24/7. Beachbody has a pretty amazing network of coaches and trainers available to provide continuous training and support. Online focus groups and New Coach University are just a couple of ways that Beachbody provides ongoing training.
  9. I love the discount & the perks! Saving 25% on all the products I love was a good enough reason for me to become a coach! In fact 85% of Beachbody's 350,000 coaches in the US and Canada are what we call a "discount coach," people who sign up as a coach because they are happy with the products and want to take advantage of a savings. But for those of us who do decide to pursue coaching as a business there are lots of perks like monthly prizes, cash incentives and the chance to earn company sponsored trips that you and your family can enjoy!
  10. I had nothing to lose. It costs $40 to become a coach. That's it! You don't have to buy any inventory and you get paid to get fit. I recouped that fee in my first month as a coach. One year later, my team is growing and so are my earnings. Even though I'm working as a coach just a coupe hours a day, my earnings are helping to pay for things like piano lessons, school clothes, Christmas gifts and this year's vacation. It's a challenge, it's exciting and the potential is limitless!
Are you curious about becoming a Beachbody Coach. If so, then The Dream Team is a good place to start. Our doors are always open to new coaches! You don't have to have any experience in fitness or nutrition. All training is provided for you at no additional coast. You don't even need to wait to complete your own health and fitness journey. Many of Beachbody's top coaches are people who started out a lot like me. They shared their own progress and were able to inspire and help others through their example. You've got what it takes - I know you do! There's an easy way to get answers to all your questions about coaching. Simply sign up to take my virtual tour. It's all online and it's self paced so you can sit down and go through it all at once or take your time. There are videos from me, from some other coaches all the way up to the #1 coach in all of Beachbody, Melanie Mitro.

10 Reasons Why Online Fitness Groups will Make you Never Want to Go Back to the Gym Again!

Wednesday, November 25, 2015

Healthy holidays challenge group, online fitness group, Brenda Ajay, 21 Day Fix, clean eating, personal coach, meal plans, healthy eating, home workouts, beginner fitness, guided fitness, fitness classes, rheumatoid arthritis and fitness,

How many times have you come across the term "challenge group" in your news feed? Online challenge groups are trending and they are taking over social media. And here's why:
Online challenge groups are like virtual gyms. They offer a convenient way for people to work out from home, free from distractions. They are cost effective. Usually, members pay one price for the initial program or challenge pack and they get everything they need to complete an effective workout for anywhere from one week to 3 months. But most of all, challenge groups are gaining popularity because - they work. People who stay committed for the length of the challenge are almost always successful. Challenge groups run by Beachbody coaches show members or "challengers" how to gain control of their health through a complete approach to wellness. Online challenge groups take challengers through a step-by-step process of making better food choices, maintaining a consistent daily fitness routine and gaining motivation and support through the group. That is what truly sets Beachbody online challenge groups apart from the rest. It's not a short term fad diet. It is a complete lifestyle change that people are encouraged to maintain for the rest of their life. It takes 21 days to make or break a habit. It's tough to limit or sacrifice things that you love like soda, fast food, and sugar. So if people can stay committed through those first 21 days, they can do it long term. That's why keeping in touch with your coach and staying accountable through the group is so important. The longer people stay connected to the group the more likely they are to reach their goals.

What would you like to improve about your health?  Members are often please to find that they lose weight, can wear smaller size clothing, have more energy, sleep better, have lowered blood pressure and cholesterol, can better manage chronic conditions like arthritis, diabetes, and fibromyalgia; and just generally feel better, stronger and younger. There are challenge groups for all interests and abilities, including focus groups for specific interests such as new and expecting moms, over 50 fitness, clean eating groups, biggest loser groups and more. There really is a group out there for everyone and anyone.

So are you thinking "What the heck is a challenge group?"

A challenge group is a group of people who are each working on improving their health and wellness. Group members follow a specific fitness and nutrition plan for a period of time (usually 3 weeks or longer) and check into a private online group periodically to receive fitness and nutrition advice and coaching, and to gain accountability and support from their peers. If that sounds complicated, let me tell you, it is not! Challenge groups are convenient, effective and fun!
Healthy holidays challenge group, online fitness group, Brenda Ajay, 21 Day Fix, clean eating, personal coach, meal plans, healthy eating, home workouts, beginner fitness, guided fitness, fitness classes, rheumatoid arthritis and fitness,

Who should join a challenge group?

  • People who don't have time to workout
  • People who are new to fitness
  • People who need to modify their diet to manage conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol and inflammation
  • People who hate to go to the gym
  • People who don't want to spend money on a personal trainer
  • People who need to lose a lot of weight and don't know where to start
  • People who are on the go and need a flexible workout schedule
  • People who are already in shape but want to take their fitness to a whole new level

Does that sound like you?

Here are ten reasons why you will benefit from joining an online challenge group and never want to go back to a gym again.

  1. Online challenge groups don't require a lot of time. Depending on the fitness program that you select, daily workouts on average last only 30-40 minutes. Think about it, that's just 2% of you day. If you've got time for Facebook, you've got time to workout.
  2. Online challenge groups are structured. Are you a fitness rookie? No problem, each fitness program is laid out in a step-by-step schedule that is easy to follow. All programs offer ways to modify the exercises so you can start simple and work your way up to more challenging moves when you are ready.
  3. The groups promote complete wellness, not just fitness. Each group is based on a 3 part system: Fitness + Nutrition + Support. That means you'll have a specific workout calendar to follow in addition to meal planning, healthy recipes and nutritional support. And most importantly, you are not alone. You will have support from your own personal coach, Beachbody instructors and your peers. That support system is the key to your success. You'll have all you questions answered and you'll receive motivation and advice from people just like you and me who have already gone through the process.
  4. You'll have your own personal fitness coach - for FREE! You coach is there to motivate and inspire you, every day. Not just by the hour. Most coaches are not certified in anything, but they have all walked in your shoes before. Coaches are former challenge group members who have already gone through their own transformation. They are there to lead the group, answer questions, offer advice and make sure you DO NOT FAIL!
  5. Challenge groups are affordable. No need to hire a trainer or pay for a gym membership. Most groups require that you purchase a "challenge pack." A challenge pack is a kit that includes your fitness program DVDs, nutrition guide, workout calendar, a one month supply of Shakeology (a nutrient dense, superfoods meal replacement - not a protein shake) and sometimes additional accessories that you need to complete the program. Once you purchase the challenge pack, you will not be required to purchase anything else. So you have access to a personal coach, indefinitely, and can join more as many challenge groups as you need to reach you goal with no additional fees.
  6. Challenge groups are convenient. Workout at your own pace and in the privacy of your own home. No crowded gyms, no leaving your house in the bitter cold to go workout, and there's no commute interrupting your day.
  7. Challenge groups work! Studies show that people who engage in group fitness program, such as challenge groups, lose more weight and are more successful at keeping it off than people who workout alone. It all comes down to accountability. No one want to let their team mates down, nor do they want to let themselves down.
  8. You can still participate even if you are away from home. Challenge groups take place in a private Facebook group that you can access anytime, anywhere with the use of a laptop, tablet or mobile device. You don't even need to take the fitness DVDs with you. If you are a Beachbody club member, you can stream your videos directly to your device.
  9. Challenge groups are a great way to meet people. Anyone living in the US and Canada can participate in an online challenge group. So it's a great way to connect with people who have similar interests.
  10. Challenge groups are fun! Hey, remember, it's fitness so you're going to sweat your butt off! But we sure have a lot of fun doing it. We exchange recipes, tell stories, have some laughs and even have some fun contests and games to keep everyone engaged. Who says fitness can't be fun?!

So what do you need to get started?

  • A Facebook account. Send me a friend request so we can connect and start talking about your goals. www.facebook.com/brenda.l.ajay
  • A free account with team Beachbody with me as your assigned coach. Need and account? Sign up here.
  • A challenge pack. Let's talk about this one. Since I'm promoting fitness, it's important that you select a fitness program that is best suited for you (there are over 30 to pick from). Your health and wellness is very important to me. I can make some good recommendations, but it helps to know a little more about you and your needs first.

That's all folks! It's simple. Joining a challenge group can change your life, maybe even save your life! It's never too late and you're never too old to start. Anyone can do this, even if you have physical limitations. Make your health a priority. After all, you're too important not to.
Ready to join us? My name is Brenda Ajay and I am a fitness & nutrition coach with Beachbody. I have gone through the process myself, I participated in many challenge groups and I believe in Beachbody programs. The process works and I am very passionate about helping others reach their goals like I have. Are you ready to give it a try? Fill out the application below and I'll be in touch soon!

How to Know When to Replace Your Workout Shoes

Saturday, November 21, 2015

running shoes, sneakers, athletic shoes, running, fitness, 21 day fix, Brenda Ajay, health, healthy living, workout, shoes
by Jerry Morgan for the Beachbody Blog

When it comes to working out, failure is a good thing. Bringing your muscles to the quivering brink of structural integrity is what makes muscles stronger. But when it comes to your footwear, the last thing you want is failure. Unlike muscles, shoes are not bound to the same laws of recovery. Once they’re done, they’re done. Use them past their “expiration point” and they may be doing you more harm than good.

It becomes important, then, to understand how long your shoes might last given your chosen workout regimen and how to know when they’ve expired.

How Long Do Workout Shoes Last?

When it comes to shoes, you really do tend to get what you pay for. Shoes that are purpose-designed with higher-quality materials tend to last longer. But no matter the manufacturer, studies have shown most shoes exhibit similar wear in one very important area: compression capabilities, or their ability to absorb the shock of you jumping.

According to research published by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), the average running shoe loses 50 percent of its compression capability in 300 to 500 miles of use. Researchers concluded that most shoes should be replaced within that mileage window or every six months, whichever comes first. But how do you calculate that when your workout doesn’t center around running?

How Your Specific Workout Affects A Shoe’s Lifespan

What does your workout entail? If it’s Shaun T’s INSANITY, your workout is bound to include a lot of intense cardio and you’ll essentially be racking up those simulated miles, in addition to jumping. In this case, those compressive forces may wear out the integrity of the shoe a bit faster than just taking a jog every morning.

Programs like Body Beast and P90X definitely have their moments of high-intensity, foot-to-floor exertion as well, but in general these workouts will be more forgiving on your shoes than INSANITY or T25. The same applies if you’re a gym-goer who trains mostly with weights: You can expect markedly longer shoe life with these types of workouts.

And if you are a runner, the life of your shoe depends on intensity. Someone who runs sprints, for example, will be translating exponentially more force through the sole of the shoe than someone who just walks. If you are a sprinter, you may want to condense the NSCA’s six-month recommendation a bit.

Signs Your Shoes Are Done

So, how do you know if your shoes are ready for the circular file? The best way is a simple visual inspection of the shoe itself.

Don’t just look on the underside of the shoe. Take the time to inspect areas that display wear long before, such as the midsole, which is visible from the side of the shoe. If the midsole shows excessive horizontal creasing or wear on the areas that absorb the most load – the heel and the ball of the foot – then it’s probably time to toss them.

You can also perform what’s called a press test, where you press on the outsole (read: bottom) of the shoe and inspect for compression. If the outsole gives very little, that means that the material is highly compressed and doing you about as much good as a set of snowshoes on hardwood.

You don't have to be great to get started, but you have to get started to be great! ~ Les Brown

Sunday, August 16, 2015

This time last year I remember boarding the Auto Train on our way home from vacation. It was going to be a long journey, 18hrs from Orlando to Virginia, so it gave me lots of time to think and plan for the kids going back to school and the long list of projects I had been putting off. There was a long list of things to do around the house and lots of stuff that the kids and my husband needed, and training and projects to complete for work….and I was exhausted! Not just because we were returning from 9 days at Disney, but because I was just physically and mentally drained! Battling rheumatoid arthritis had taken a toll on me. Although I finally had the disease under control, it had left my body weak, aged, sore and terribly overweight - obese was the term my Dr. used!

As usual, I put myself last. That list was never ending and it was creating stress for me. I was just growing older, becoming more weak, suffering more pain and gaining more weight - and struggling harder and harder to get it all done. No matter how hard I tried, I would always be pecking away at that list, day after day, doing things for everybody except myself. I felt unimportant and miserable. I decided that to take better care of my family, I needed to first take care of myself. For the first time ever I made myself a priority. It was not selfish, it was a necessity. My desire to get healthy and fit became stronger than my excuses.

I put the to do list aside and really started to focus on becoming well. Not about losing weight - but about improving my health and getting fit - there's a difference. When the goal is to lose weight, we look for a diet. Diets have never worked for me. There's always a start and an end to a diet. And we all know what happens when you reach the end… those vicious pounds come back, and they bring friends! So my new "self" to do list looked more like this:

Until this point, I made some small steps in the right direction. I enjoyed walking and swimming. I started 21 Day Fix but never completed the program. I eliminated gluten from my diet because it was causing inflammation and triggering my RA. I knew I had to make changes but I just wasn't consistent and I certainly wasn't committed to my health. I didn't have the time, money or the energy for fitness.

I ordered that 21 Day Fix program a couple of months earlier form a girl in Pittsburgh named Melanie Mitro. As the train rolled on, I began reading more about the 21 Day Fix program. I turned to Melanie's blog "Committed to Getting Fit," and discovered that the 21 Day Fix program, like all Beachbody programs, followed a proven formula

Fitness + Nutrition + Support = Success.

The more I learned about Beachbody, the more I became convinced that I needed to follow their proven system and stick to it. I filled out an application that night to join one of Melanie's challenge groups. I had no idea what it was but it was one of those things that can't hurt to try. Looking back, it was a good decision. Committing to that first Beachbody program and to that challenge group has led to so many good things in my life. I am mindful about the way I eat, fitness has become something that I enjoy, and I am grateful for the opportunity to pay it forward by helping other people.

Fast forward to today and I look and feel better than I have in a very long time. I mentioned in a Facebook post yesterday that I reached 2 important milestones last week.
#1 is that I am half way to my goal weight!  To me, that number isn't as important as how much better I feel. There's no end to this journey. Eating healthy foods and daily fitness are just part of my day and always at the top of my to do list. Being healthier, stronger and having more energy means I can get so much more accomplished. Beachbody fitness programs are not "one size fits all." The system that worked for me is not the answer for everyone, but having a coach and participating in challenge groups is key to finding your own fit formula. Why? Because everyone chooses the fitness program that they like best. Everyone works out at their own pace and in the comfort of their own home. Everyone is working towards an individual goal. The coaching and online group just offers a support system, accountability and motivation to make sure you finish the program victorious! A coach will help you select a program and fit it into your life the way it works best for you! What I love most about being involved with this company and about Beachbody coaching is the focus Beachbody gives on treating everyone as an individual. Everyone matters, every sweat matters. You are not just a coach or a customer, you are part of a team.

Are you ready to get started on our own health and fitness journey? Not sure where to begin? Join one of my online fitness and nutrition challenge groups. Fill out this application for more information:

Coaches change lives. We don't sell anything except a healthy lifestyle based on clean eating and fitness. We promote the use of Beachbody fitness programs because they focus on fitness + nutrition + online accountability. Start a lifestyle, not a fad diet. One reason I chose Beachbody coaching is because I can easily fit it into my busy day. First, and foremost, I am a wife and mom of 3 and my tribe is my number one priority. I also have another
career working as a travel agent from my home. The biggest concern I had before I decided to become a coach was how in the world I was going to find the time to get another business up and running. But I was happy to learn that the company offers complete flexibility. You work from home and set your own hours so you can work as little or as much as you are comfortable with. Some people treat it like a hobby and are able to earn enough to cover the cost of their own fitness products, or their cell phone bill, or for holiday shopping. On the other end of the spectrum, there are coaches who are committed full-time and earn a living solely from coaching. The opportunities are limitless. If you focus on building your business, it can be very lucrative. This is not a get-rich-quick scheme, but if you are driven to succeed, coaching can be both personally and financially rewarding.... simply by helping others.

Coaches change lives. We don't sell anything except a healthy lifestyle based on clean eating and fitness. We promote the use of Beachbody fitness programs because they focus on fitness + nutrition + online accountability. Start a lifestyle, not a fad diet.
I'm not a sales person. I simply share my story. The last thing I want to do is offend my family and friends with annoying sales pitches. I do not sell anything except a healthy lifestyle that is based upon eating whole, natural foods and by exercising regularly. I hope that my story and my transformation will inspire others to make their health and wellness a priority. I believe in Beachbody fitness programs and Shakeology. I will never have to "diet" again because my lifestyle has changed. I am stronger, healthier and feel younger today because of Beachbody's complete wellness system that includes fitness, nutrition and support. Step away from those 3 elements, and it's just another diet.

Lord knows, I was not a fitness expert when I started on my journey. I was overweight, in pain and could barely walk. But through my own transformation, I've gotten to know the Beachbody system. Everything I learned about Beachbody, I learned through my own experience. As far as coaching goes, Beachbody has training and tools available to help you every step of the way. I have a wonderfully supportive coach, Melanie Mitro, and an awesome support system from other coaches in our team. Our team is made up of people of all ages and backgrounds. There are stay-at-home moms, people with 9-5 jobs, professionals, retirees, and college students, and so on. So if you are considering becoming a coach but you've got a few reservations, I encourage you to reach out to me. I'm looking to expand my team with individuals who want to work on themselves while helping others. People who want guidance, not a boss. Upbeat folks who are open to learning. And those who want to add on to their income from the comfort of their own home.

Curiosity Killed the Fat!

Sunday, July 5, 2015

Curious about Beachbody? I was too - for a long, long time before I decided to consider it. I knew a little about Beachbody fitness programs because my husband, Bill, used them regularly. At 50, Bill is in the best shape of his life! He tried his best to encourage me to use the fitness programs and to get in better shape and it frustrated him and the kids to see me spending so much time laying on the couch, tired and in pain. When I was 42, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. I spent 2 years trying to get pain free, and the last thing that was on my mind was getting fit!

Little by little I began to recover and after 2 years of medical treatment and modifying my diet, I received the good news I had been waiting for - my RA was in remission! I was very fortunate to be in this category and I was finally beginning to feel like my old self again. At this point, the best thing I could do for myself would be to get in shape, lose some weight and gain strength to protect myself against any future flare-ups.

It is Not Mission Impossible!

I'm not athletic and I didn't know a whole lot about fitness, and let me tell you I was overwhelmed by choices. I thought about joining a gym, but I wasn't looking forward to the drive back-and-forth plus the time it would take to complete a workout - especially in the dead of winter! Friends offered to go walking and invited me to yoga classes, but I just didn't feel like it was enough. To accomplish my goal of losing weight, getting stronger and gaining mobility, I needed to get serious! I need a complete lifestyle adjustment!

Stop Putting Yourself at the Bottom of Your To Do List!

For the longest time, I thought you only had to exercise if you wanted to lose weight. But over the past few years, I've changed the way I look at my health and I've learned to put myself at the top of my to do list. Not because I'm selfish, but because I decided to make happiness and health a priority.

Invest in Yourself, Challenge Yourself, Transform Yourself!

I lead my family by example, and I can take much better care of them if I first take care of myself.
I found success through Beachbody because it is a complete wellness system, not a fad diet. It's convenient and I can workout at my own pace and in the privacy of my own home. I have done 21 Day FIX, P90, PiYo and Slim in 6. I also drink Shakeology every day and follow a clean eating lifestyle. As a coach, I do not SELL anything except a healthy lifestyle that is based upon the principles of eating whole natural foods and regular exercise. Of course, I do promote Beachbody Fitness programs and supplements because they work! I have tried them and I know that if you follow Beachbody's blueprint, you too will get the results you want.

Share Your Success!

Not only have I transformed my body, but I now have more energy and a more positive outlook on life and today, I love to share my success with others through coaching. It's not a get-rich-quick scheme, I do it because I want to make a difference. I do it to help end the trend of obesity and to promote wellness. I do it to help give hope and encouragement to people who feel like giving up and giving in. Yes, I do work at it... but it is as rewarding as it is challenging to help people get fit and feel great, just like I did!

How to get started with fitness without breaking a sweat

Sunday, May 24, 2015

If you haven’t exercised or tried to eat clean in a while (or ever!), Day 1 of a 30, 60, or 90-day fitness and nutrition program can feel intimidating.

It doesn’t have to be. Here are several small things you can do to get started. With these simple tips, you can begin to prepare your body and mind for a healthier lifestyle before you even break a sweat or eat your first green vegetable. Though you could snack on some snap peas while reading this article…

Figure Out How Many Calories You Should Eat

Knowing is half the battle, right? Use this simple method to determine approximately how many calories you should try to eat each day:

  • Sedentary lifestyle (desk job): Current weight in pounds x 12 = Maintenance Caloric Needs.
  • Moderately active lifestyle (server in a restaurant and/or doing one of our entry level programs, like Power 90 or Hip Hop Abs: Current weight in pounds x 13 = Maintenance Caloric Needs.

  • Highly active lifestyle (construction worker and/or doing one of our elite programs, like P90X or INSANITY): Current weight in pounds x 14 = Maintenance Caloric Needs.

From there, subtract 500 calories and that’s probably a good deficit for weight loss. (But make sure that number stays about 1,200. Anything lower can be dangerous in the long term.) Conversely, if you’re trying to gain muscle mass, add 300 calories or so—but make sure you’re also doing a solid weight lifting program like Body Beast so those calories have a place to go.

Stretch

Get those muscles ready to move. If you haven’t used them in a while, do some gentle stretching to wake them up and get familiar with the current limits of your flexibility. Knowing where you’re tight can help prevent injury. Try these stretches to improve hip and lower back flexibility so you’ll be ready to move comfortably in workouts.

Start to Move More

Even if you’re not Pushing Play yet, you can begin to make an effort to move your body more every day. Take a walk, stand (or do squats!) when you talk on the phone, take the stairs, park a little farther away from your destination, stretch during television commercials, rearrange the furniture in your living room.

Drink Water

Being dehydrated can make you sore even if you don’t exercise. Set yourself up for success, and minimize initial muscle soreness, by drinking plenty of water in the days leading up to the start of your fitness program. Get in the habit of drinking enough water every day. How do you know if you if you're getting enough water? Use this simple formula:

Your current body weight (in pounds) x 0.5 = Ounces of water to drink each day

Throw Away Junk Food

Empty your desk, cupboards, fridge, freezer, car, and secret snack stash drawer of foods and drinks you know you shouldn’t be eating. If you want to reach your fitness goal, prevent temptation by removing junk food from your house. If the packaged foods are unopened, donate them. We know you spent good money on those Ding Dongs and Doritos, but they are doing the opposite of helping you reach your health and fitness goals.

Build a Healthy Pantry

Now that you’ve eliminated the processed junk food from your home, replace it with good-for-you staples that will help you create healthy meals every day.

Set Up Your Work Out Space

This could be as easy as moving the coffee table in your living room, or as elaborate as setting up a dedicated gym in your garage or basement. You won’t need much space to exercise, but it’s a good idea to figure out where you’ll do it and make the space usable and inviting for the workouts you’ll be doing.

Plan an Outing that Involves Exercise

A great way to get into the spirit of exercise before you actually commit to a fitness program is to plan activities with friends that get you moving. Invite friends or family for a hike, go ice skating, or organize a softball or flag-football game.

Find Your Reason Why

Celebrity trainer Tony Horton says, “If you’re really caught up in the numbers on the scale, or the dress size, and what’s happening with the tape measure, chances are that does’t really motivate or inspire you. Find a new purpose. Find a new reason why. The reason why has got to be so powerful, so strong that you’re not going to quit, you’re not going to fail, and you’re going to be consistent, and show up 5-7 days a week for the rest of your life.”

Build a Support System

Getting fit doesn’t have to be something you do alone! Announce your commitment to get healthier and stronger to your friends, family, and coworkers. Start or join a Challenge Group, join a Facebook group, or recruit workout buddies and accountability partners to help you stay motivated when your resolve starts to slip or you feel tempted to make unhealthy choices.

Make Time in Your Schedule

Figure out when you’ll fit exercise into your daily schedule and begin to make adjustments to reserve that time slot every day. Will you work out in the morning? During your lunch break? In the evenings? Schedule exercise time in your calendar and commit to it as an important meeting with yourself. You wouldn’t skip a meeting with your boss just because you feel tired or grumpy, would you? No, you’d be there on time with a smile on your face and do your best to impress.

It’s OK to Start Slowly

You don’t have to Push Play and go full speed on the first day. If you’ve been spending the last few months or years sitting on the couch, just do what you can. It’s OK to start with a few minutes of exercise and work your way up to a full workout. Five or ten minutes of exercise a day is better than no minutes. Try to add one minute each day until you can do a full workout. In his article, 5 Steps to Avoid Muscle Soreness, our fitness expert Steve Edwards said, “It’s very tempting to begin an exercise program with a lot of enthusiasm, but try your best to go at a reasonable pace. If you’ve never exercised, or it’s been a long time since you have, go much easier than you feel you are capable of on Day 1 and ramp things up at a pace that is based on how you feel. If you’re not sore, go a little harder the next day. If you’re a little sore, take it down a notch.”
